My husband and I consider going to the local home furniture store as our cheap date night. We stroll the aisles, amazed at how much the place has to offer. As we walk through the place, we imagine all that can be incorporated into our own current home, our dream home and that gigantic house we saw on TV. We laugh at things we would never purchase. We treat it as an experience, an event a land of infinite possibilities.

Next time you are at your home furniture store, do the same thing. Treat it as not a place to run in and run out of quickly to just pick up what you need. Instead, go there with an hour to spend. Roam the aisles. Reinvent your living space as you check out all they have to offer you. How do you want to redo your dream bedroom? What would look good in your new living room? Do you want a green dining room? Flip through the color swatches and find the perfect color. What color exactly is your green dining room?   Homestead Green? Mountain Laurel? Or maybe even Silver Pine? Now that you have picked your color, find an area rug to go over your new hardwood floor. The green dining room would not be complete without some new wood blinds and some beautiful window treatments. This is the place for accenting your home furnishings with all the latest designs. Find some accent pieces, a new table cloth, anything to update the look or feel.

When thinking of your home furnishings, do not just consider things inside the four walls of your house. Go beyond.  Go outside. Your backyard is as much your living space as your living room is. Create an extension of your home with outdoor seating and accessories. Walk to the outdoor section and see the assortment on display. Find a table for six.  Is it sturdy enough for that next big wind? While you are there select an umbrella to match the table, something large enough to shade your guests from the sun but easy to roll back on a pretty day. Spend time testing the different chairs, seeing which is more comfortable, which swivels the way you like, which would look so great next to that new grill.

After you have found the perfect place for outdoor entertainment, move on to what you would love on a lazy Sunday afternoon….a hammock. Select a hammock stand that is sturdy and will survive the elements of being outside all the time. The hammock itself should be a color that does not get dirty easily. The hammock color should complement the hammock stand and style. Go ahead, test them out. You want to be sure you select the most comfortable one they have–you will be taking advantage of some midday snoozes in there for sure.

Once you have built your impressive wish list, go through the details and find things that fit both your home and your budget. Can you spruce up the paint or buy that hammock?  Design changes do not have to be complete overhauls or cost a fortune. Keep current with the latest trends and see what is out there. Incorporate small changes here and there to update your home furnishings look and you will have a home you love to come home to.
