Solid Dark Wood Furniture – Why It’s Great

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

There’s something remarkably unique about using dark wood furniture in the home in terms of the feeling it creates. Furniture that is deep and dark seems to somehow give rise to an instant feeling of memorable craftsmanship, sturdiness and superiority all at once, no matter what the particular style of the furniture. The dark wood furniture could be in oriental style, traditional Italian, ultra contemporary or another style, it really doesn’t matter; it’s the depth and richness of shade that really stands out.

Another feature that we shouldn’t ignore is the type of wood that the piece of furniture has been made from – the grain of the wood chosen will deliver it’s own kind of style to the piece. Hardwoods are frequently used as the basis for dark wood furniture as are softwoods.. Often the lighter woods listed here are stained to give them the dark quality.. For those whose bank balanacesdoesn’t extend to buying solid wood furniture, there are severalveneered pieces of furniture that can look as beautifulthough unfortunately can sometimes fall short of the quality and longevity that solid wood furniture offers.

Some styles of dark wood furniture, (particularly modern and oriental styles) are also lacquered which gives the wood a high gloss sheen and also ensures a tough, cleanable exterior. The shiny finish has the added advantage of bouncing light around the room, and so can be used successfully in small spaces without the need to worry that the dark quality will overwhelm a room with a heavy atmosphere (as can be the case with un-lacquered dark wood furniture).

In conjunction with a light background, the use of rich, deep, dark furniture creates a fabulous distinction that brings in qualities of sophistication and refinement to a room with ease. Using dark wood furniture throughout the home can really be a show stopper.

Why Furniture Bar Stools

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Looking at the boundless options for the available ranges of furniture bar stools in the market, you could be pretty excited. You can choose from many options such as stools with or without back support, whether you need them in steel or in wood, you can find them in single colour as well as in multi-color, you can go for a smooth, well-groomed style or a rough-and-tough design.

If you don’t have the specifications clear in your mind, then choosing the right stool may be quite difficult. There are many people who get confused and buy something that would be totally inappropriate and then regret that decision.

When going shopping for furniture bar stools, you must keep a few things in mind. The first of all essentials, you must know the type of stool you need. In case you have a houseful of modern, sleek furniture’s, then going for a bulky stool with highly embroidered fabric could destroy the entire look of the house. But if you consider, without any prohibitions, to keep entirely opposite designs, it’s better advised to consult some interior designer and ask the shop owners if they can allow you to take the stools on a trial run for one day on lease. That will probably give you a fairly good idea about the look of the room with or without that stool.

The next thing after considering the essentials when purchasing furniture, bar stools is the range of prices for the products. If you want to create a fancy look for the room, then it’s justified to spend some handsome money. However, in case you are looking for something cozy, then you should better explore other good options in another shop. Your best bargain may be awaiting anywhere!

When making a decision about furniture, bar stools, make it a point to hit the stores just a week before the sale tags go up. Before the start of the sale week, you can have a close look at the furniture stools you like and keep a mark on them. Once on, the first thing you can do is buy your stools off at the ’sale’ price and drive home a hot bargain. However, if you cannot wait for a time like that, make sure you get exactly what you want. It takes lot of your precious time to replace the stools, purchase new ones and go for other exchanges.

Taking The Time To Look Into The Past

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

What does your work area look like? Is it a den or study setup? Maybe it is in your bedroom. There may be several things that you wish to improve about it. Your computer workstation desk may leave a lot to be desired. Your computer may need a new operating system or upgrade. Maybe you could use a new chair, too. There are ways to improve your area. This will not be expensive. It does not require much work, either.

Walk into your room and close your eyes. Let the years fade away. Travel back in time 100 years. It may take a few moments. Finally, open your eyes and examine the room. Keep in mind that it is one hundred years earlier.

Gaze at your work area. Is there a pad and pencil there? You might have one of those fancy inventions called a typewriter. However, most people cannot afford them. Check the time. You will not see any digital clocks. Items like men’s watches are much different. You have to wind them up, each day. There may be a calendar on your wall. You will not see anything that is electric. Most people cannot afford that either.

If you are a writer, you will be writing your work in longhand. When you make a mistake, you have to scratch it out, or start over. There is no spell check. There are no word processing programs. There is little contact with the outside world. If you live in an urban setting, you can depend on neighbors and newspapers. There is no TV or radio. Unless you are well off, you do not have a phonograph.

You may smoke. Many people do, with little regard to health. However, be careful. You may accidentally knock your ash tray over, on your desk. You cannot reach for your cordless handheld vacuum. You will need to manually clean it up.

If it is summertime, you may be quite uncomfortable. There is no air conditioning. There are no electric fans. You will wear light colored clothing as a necessity, not out of fashion. Work at your desk in the early morning hours. It is cooler. You could work at night, but it may be hard to see. You will need candles or oil lamps.

Conclusion

Is your room or workstation outdated? It may be a little depressing to look at. However, think about people one hundred years ago. It may not be so depressing. You may actually feel very fortunate.

Easy Platform Bed Projects – Your Ultimate Manual

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Selecting a bed to use for your bedroom is not easy as it seems.  If this is not your very first time to buy one, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.  There are a lot of points to consider.  You want to take a look at the planning of your room.  You also have to look at its size.

Even the ease of transporting them or moving them around must be considered.  Infrequently, it is difficult to find the ideal one.  If you experience this, you might need to think about making your own platform bed.

A platform bed isn’t very hard to make.  You can follow straightforward bed plans that don’t require a lot of skills in woodworking.  With some background in taking measurements, cutting wood and battering with a hammer, you can already make a basic platform bed.  Some abilities in polishing wood and applying paint can also turn out to be useful.  If there’s an area you actually know less than nothing about like cutting wood as an example, you can ask aid from a local chippie.

Straightforward platform bed plans needn’t have the common parts of a bed like a footboard and a headboard.  A flat surface raised by 4 legs to support the mattress is all that’s required.

To get started you need to know the measurements of the room.  Study what proportion of the space can be allotted for the bed.  Then choose the materials you’ll use.  There are different types of wood you can find in a hardware store.  Just ask the sales clerk which one you can simply cut with a saw and put along with a hammer and some nails.  They will be more than prepared to help.  There are even stores that can cut the wood for you if you have the measurements in hand.

A simple platform bed can simply be changed into a rather more elaborate bed later on if you ever find the necessity to.  You are able to add a footboard and a headboard.  Some straightforward platform bed plans have provisions for these accessories for future improvements so adding them shouldn’t be a difficulty.

Quilts Can Be A Beautiful, Functional Option

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Retreating to a relaxing bedroom can be an effective remedy to the stresses of the day. You will see the furnishings before you have an opportunity to experience them, so paying attention to the room’s decor can be important. Many people who want to achieve a cozy feeling use quilts to add a touch of charm.

Buying a quilt set is a simple way to decorate the bed. For sizes larger than twin, the sets will normally include two shams and a quilt. Many of the 4 piece sets include a decorative toss pillow, but some may feature a dust ruffle instead. You can also purchase a complete collection that will include a sheet set to match.

It is not difficult to find modern quilt sets for any size of bed. Rarely, however, will you be able to find an heirloom or antique set for a queen or king. It is even less common to find a set, and you will normally only be able to purchase an antique quilt. If you want shams, you can buy new ones, perhaps in a solid shade, that will match your quilt.

Quilts can also look inviting when displayed on the wall. King quilts can cover a lot of space and make nice backdrops when hung at the head of a bed. Do not use nails to hang your quilts, however. Stitch a rod pocket on the back of the quilt, sewing it on by hand and limiting the stitching to the back and filling. A pocket about four inches wide allows you to insert a rod to hang the quilt. Some people use ornate curtain rods to mount their quilts on the wall.

Racks that hang on the wall provide an option for displaying quilts either permanently or overnight. The folded quilt hangs over the bar, and many styles have shelves above the bar to hold the pillows. There are also floor racks that let you drape the quilt as either a display or when not in use.

Quilts need special attention when it comes to cleaning. Antique quilts should be cleaned only by a professional with experience in old fabrics. Many newer ones are machine washable, but do best in a front loading machine. Quilts on display should be vacuumed periodically to prevent dust from becoming embedded. Change the position of quilts hung on a rack to prevent dust or fade lines. Keep quilts out of direct sunlight or they can fade, especially the antique ones, and consider rotating them occasionally to protect them.

For hundreds of years, people have used quilts for warmth, beauty, or both. In bygone days, women pieced the tops from scraps or old clothing, primarily to provide the family with inexpensive warmth for the bed. Over time, hundreds of patterns have been created and preserved, and fabrics run the gamut from cotton to satin and velvet. For anyone who wants a charming, cozy bedroom, quilts can be just the right finishing touch.
